Where will I receive my treatment? It’s often one of the first thoughts that surfaces when starting infusion therapy, and for good reason.
Treatment is not only about the medication itself, but also about the experience surrounding it. The setting where you receive care can shape how you feel before, during, and after each infusion. It’s important to us that you feel supported and empowered in your decisions.
The right location for treatment depends on your health needs, lifestyle, and insurance considerations—and it should align with what allows you to feel confident moving forward. This decision is ultimately determined by you and your care team.
You deserve choices when it comes to your care. At AOM, we’re committed to creating a seamless experience while offering flexible treatment settings that fit your life. That’s why we’ve invested in private infusion suites, known as ambulatory infusion suites (AIS), while continuing to provide home infusion, a service we’ve proudly offered for more than 30 years. Depending on your circumstances, you may even use more than one setting over time as your needs evolve.
Understanding your site of care options can help you make the best decision for your treatment journey.
What Does “Site of Care” Mean?
Where your infusion therapy is administered is known as a “site of care,” simply meaning the “location.”
Infusions may take place in several locations, including:
- Hospital outpatient departments
- Skilled nursing facilities
- Physician offices
- Dedicated infusion suites
- Your home
At AOM, we focus on two primary options: at-home and private infusion suites. Both options are designed to provide comfortable, personalized treatment supported by your full care team.
In hospital settings, nurses are often responsible for many patients at once, which can limit the time available for individualized attention and make it harder to build consistent relationships with your care team.
Our model is intentionally designed to create a more personal experience. In our infusion suites, nurses may care for a small number of patients at a time, with our patient-to-nurse ratios lower than those typically found in hospital settings. This allows for more focused attention, stronger continuity, and a more connected care experience throughout treatment.
Additionally, hospital-based infusions can expose you to a broader range of illnesses and often come at a significantly higher cost.
As AOM Chief Clinical Officer, John Vlahopoulos explains, “Studies show that infusion therapy at home or at an infusion suite saves you money, costing three to five times less. Other research shows it’s safer, too. You aren’t exposed to the broad range of patients or illnesses that boost the risk of infection during treatment in hospitals or skilled nursing facilities.”
Whether the setting, our focus remains the same: thoughtful and quality care designed for you.
Receiving Your Therapy at Home
For many patients, home infusion offers comfort in familiarity. There can be something grounding about receiving treatment in your own space, surrounded by the routines and environment that feel steady and known.
Home infusion is also less disruptive to daily life, particularly for longer treatments. Patients can continue with work, care for children, or manage other responsibilities while receiving therapy in the comfort of. Being at home allows you to maintain a sense of normalcy and control, helping you feel more at ease throughout your treatment journey.
When Home Infusion May Be a Good Fit
Home infusion may be especially supportive if you:
- Prefer the convenience and privacy of home
- Live in a rural area or are not near an infusion suite
- Experience difficulty traveling or have limited mobility
- Receive longer-duration treatments
What Treatment Day Looks Like
Your treatment experience begins before infusion day.
Prior to your first infusion, your Clinical Care Navigator will contact you to review your treatment plan, answer any questions, and ensure you know what to expect. After this call, your first appointment will be scheduled, and our pharmacists will arrange for your medication to be delivered directly to your home before your scheduled treatment day.
The day of treatment, your nurse will arrive and:
- Complete a thorough health assessment
- Review your treatment and medications with you
- Discuss any potential side effects
Consistency is an important part of feeling comfortable during treatment. Whenever possible, you will have the same nurse for each visit. Additionally, “we want to make sure you are completely happy with your infusion nurse. If you don’t click or feel uncomfortable for any reason, we are happy to make a change,” shares Erin Duvall, RN, AOM Clinical Nursing Coordinator.
Our home infusion combines clinical oversight with the comfort of your own surroundings—helping reduce disruption to your routine. Take a peek inside the at-home infusion experience to understand what to expect and how to set up for your first home infusion:
